JAMES ACASTER

The don, the master, the finest comic of his generation returns to Good Ship Comedy as he road tests new material ahead of his next national tour in 2019.  Since he last visited our club James has become the first stand-up comic to release 4 Netflix specials simultaneously and has started his assault on America as he tries to make it big over the pond.

For those who need a catch-up, James is one of the most brilliant and distinctive young comedians of his generation. A whimsical master, he has received acclaim from around the world, including a record breaking 5 consecutive nominations for ‘Best Comedy Show’ at the 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 & 2016 Edinburgh Fringe Festivals, and winning the 2015 Chortle Award for Best Show, and Best International Show Award at the 2014 New Zealand International Comedy Festival. As well as his glowing stand-up career, James is also a TV and radio regular appearing on the likes of Mock the Week, Live at the Apollo and Have I Got News For You.

“This is stand-up of the highest, most playful order” The Guardian

“One of comedy’s most original voices” Evening Standard

“one of the most consistently brilliant and distinctive comedians of his generation” Chortle

“He really is rewriting the comedy rulebook” Time Out

“If Oxford wants to study stand-up in depth, Acaster is a good place to start” Sunday Times

CHRIS KENT

Hailing from ‘The Rebel County’ (That’s Cork for anyone outside Ireland), Chris gave up the day job as an electrician to pursue his calling in comedy. He emerged onto the Irish comedy scene in 2009 after winning the Bulmers Nuttin’ But Funny competition.

Since then he has quickly established himself on the Irish circuit and became sought out to open for some of his favourite acts, including Dylan Moran, David O’ Doherty and Neil Delamare to name but a few. After making his Edinburgh Fringe debut his show was so well received that he was chosen to support Bill Burr in Vicar Street, on his only Irish date that year.

In 2015 Chris made his UK TV debut on Russell Howard’s Stand Up Central. Shortly afterwards, he moved to the UK to try and establish himself on the UK comedy scene, where he has quickly become a favourite at some of the top clubs.  His sharply observed, gently odd and easily accessible material have made him a true favourite with punters and fellow comics alike.

“Compelling storyteller, truly surprising, beautifully delivered” The Scotsman

“Breathes new life into anecdotal comedy” The List

“Massive potential and already frighteningly accomplished” The British Comedy Guide

KELLY CONVEY

Kelly Convey is a comedian who is not one to mince her words when giving audiences an insight into what modern women really think. While her outspoken and forward-thinking musings may go against the grain, she has a refreshing and relatable authenticity that regularly wins audiences over.  Voted by The Metro as “1 of 9 Hilarious Women to Look Out for in 2017”, Kelly Convey is, no doubt, one to watch.

“In-your-face and reassuringly confident.” Chortle

JIM CAMPBELL

Jim is a stand up, writer and actor. His 2 solo hours at Edinburgh played to sold out houses and critical acclaim and his debut was named one of the Top 10 EdFringe shows in the Amused Moose/2Entertain Laughter Awards. Jim has written for ESPN and Russell Howard’s Good News (BBC3) and his podcast, The Football Ramble has won 7 awards, has over 80,000 listeners and recently packed fans into venues up and down the country on their inaugural tour.

★★★★ The List ★★★★ Fest

“Exquisitely written, punchline-driven material without cliché. It’s hard to imagine a subject he couldn’t come up with an original and literate joke about.” Chortle

AND YOUR RESIDENT HOST:

BEN VAN DER VELDE

Standing a statuesque five foot five inches high (not in heels) and weighing in at eleven stone (on a good day) Ben is the current light-middleweight contender for compering champion of North London.

"Sharp and crafty gagsmith, a life-giving compere." Chortle

"Wonderfully improvised riffs showcasing his impressive spontaneity and sharp tongue." Edinburgh Festivals Magazine

“The perfect comedy club host – he is a master of audience interaction. The audience weren’t just warmed up, but pretty hysterical even before the first act of the night hit the stage.”  Huffington Post
